NEW VIDEO: N.D. Wilson's "Chestertonian Calvinism" from Grace Agenda 2017

Posted on

Just released: N.D. Wilson's entire talk from Grace Agenda 2017.

A doctor’s appointment and a delayed flight from Los Angeles landed N.D. Wilson at his home in Moscow at 3 a.m., just a few short hours before he was scheduled to deliver this talk. In it, Nate set out to combine the truths of Calvinism with the mammoth joy of G.K. Chesterton. It wasn't public at the time, but that was almost exactly one month before he would need surgery to remove an egg-sized brain tumor.

In this hour-long lecture, Nate sought to answer this question: What is it about the human race that tends toward wonderless-ness? Well, as Chesterton points out, wonder precedes gratitude, and a key principle of unbelief is not saying “thank you.” The reformed have always celebrated God’s exhaustive sovereignty, but we can be apt to forget to "wonder" -- God's sovereignty means lightning, sugar-cane, and fainting goats too.

As Nate heads into surgery for the brain tumor today (May 2), his own description of Chestertonian Calvinism is especially appropriate. All things are from the Lord, and that is the encouraging foundation for gratitude in any trial. The Lord gives. The Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
