What do the words "Gospel" and "Son of God" mean? We are so familiar with them that we fail to look at what they meant in the original context.

Look Inside the Book

Mark's Gospel is sometimes assumed to be the least interesting or helpful gospel because it is the shortest and speaks in a plain and direct style. Mark Horne helps us better appreciate this gospel's goals by highlighting features not immediately apparent to the modern eye.

Horne uses its Old Testament and first-century context to point out the typological roles that Jesus, John, and the disciples fulfill as the new leaders of their nation, a period when the old Israel was both restored and redefined. He shows the gospel's intricate structures of miracle cycles and other events that bring out the major themes of calling and restoration, all playing into the kingship and triumph of Christ.

This devotional-style commentary enables the reader to see through the gospel of Mark's humble exterior into the riches that lie beneath.

What People Are Saying:

"I wish I would have had this book in my possession when I co-taught through Mark.... Some of the commentaries I’ve read look at the individual texts, and, while making connections with previous and future passages, usually don’t focus on the bigger pictures. Horne here, on the other hand, always keeps the bigger picture (with the story of the OT) in mind. He skillfully leads you back to the OT, and if you agree with him or not, you’ll become a better reader for thinking through his conclusions." -Spencer

"An eye-opening exposition of Mark that focuses on the old testament background and typology employed throughout the text." -Joshua

"This is a keeper. I'll probably have it on my shelf and use it as a reference while I'm reading the gospels. Lots of good stuff." -Christopher

A good commentary. Very brief in parts but a good resource to have on hand!

The Victory According to Mark

I’d never seen Mark’s gospel outlined as Horne has in this book. I was so fascinated that I found a copy of Austin Farrer’s “A Study in St Mark” which he referenced. Good reads both. I highly recommend Mark Hornet’s book. I am re-reading it at this time.
