The Field Guide for Clear Thinkers

Stymied and stumped by arguments that wrap around you like webs of mystification?

Dr. Ransom's Bestiary is perfect for supplementing any logic curriculum, from junior high to college, or for adults who want to learn more about logic! This book is filled with illustrations, descriptions, exercises, and analysis to help you identify and avoid fallacies you might encounter in everyday life.

Fifty informal fallacies belong to families—fallacies of distraction, ambiguity, form, and "millennial fallacies"—and each one has names, nicknames, and a sketch of its adorable, harmless mode and its true feral face. Get the practice you need to identify the little stinkers wherever they might appear using flashcards for all 50 fallacies.

Each fallacy is followed by discussion questions and exercises; a line-listed answer key and both one and two-semester schedules are included in the back of the book.

            Adorable, Indeed!

We love this resource! My kids all flip through it for fun and draw the cute Beasties. A wonderful way to remember fallacies.

            Best Way to Learn Fallacies!

This book (along with the related flash cards) are a great way to learn logical fallacies. The illustrations of the beasts, the stories that go along with them, and the practice exercises at the end of each chapter provide several ways for the reader to become familiar with each fallacy and put them into practice.

            Great content! Bad binding

The book is great; the illustrations are hilarious and help my son to remember which fallacy is which. My only gripe is that when it arrived I skimmed through it before giving it to him, and after just that one quick readthrough the cover was already coming detached from the pages. Two reads later by my son and pages are falling out and the cover has come off completely. Y'all need to check the expiration date on your binding glue or something 'cause that's just silly.

Hi Alyssa -- That's definitely a binding error; doesn't often happen but that one must have made it through Quality Control! Please email service@canonpress.com with your order # and address and we'll get you a new copy in the mail as soon as possible!

Awesome!! A switch has turned on that cannot be turned off. As I hear conversations the inconsistency of thought is overwhelming. We truly operate with those adorable creatures. If we could view the culture mindset it would look like a gremlin movie on steriods.

            Great for Middle School

My middle schoolers really love this book as an introduction to logic. We cover one "beast" each week, and they really enjoy identifying fallacies during everyday life. The questions and examples at the end of the explanation of each fallacy really help cement the concepts.
