Look Inside the Book

This package includes:

"The world seems to be quite full of grammar books, but it is not easy to find a text today that covers all the bases, still emphasizes diagramming, is not laden with politically correct jargon, and embraces a Christian world view.

I am certainly not claiming to have achieved all these things in this little book, but I have aimed for it.

I wanted to produce a grammar book that could be used to teach junior-high students as well as high-school or college students and adults, a book that covered many of the aspects of English grammar succinctly; I also wanted a book that could assume the biblical view of language.

At the same time I wanted to whet the appetite of the student to want to know more about the history of our language." ~ Nancy Wilson

In this English grammar guide, Nancy Wilson surveys the major concepts in English grammar for beginners at the late elementary and junior high level (recommended grades 6-9, ages 10-14).

Wilson avoids common, contrived sentences that serve merely to illustrate her point. Instead, she uses many selections from Scripture and from great English writers which help to instruct the student through their content, style, and structure.

In addition to a helpful format that highlights key definitions, punctuation issues, and important concepts, short historical sidebars tell the fascinating story of the development of English.

She continues the traditional and challenging exercise of sentence diagramming, which trains students to quickly analyze the structure of any given sentence.

The grammatical explanations, the logic of diagrams, and the rhetoric of her examples blend with complementary emphases to create a helpful classical and Christian text.

What People Are Saying:

If I was taught grammar this way...rather than drill and kill, I believe I would have fallen in love with grammar and language.

Five Stars. Lessons laid out nicely and able to use it at your own pace. Interesting, not overwhelming, understandable - grow in grace

By far the best grammar product we have used. Our daughter understood it with ease and didn't require any help even with diagramming sentences! There is also a wealth of sidebar info. You can't beat it for the price

Amazing help for people grasping classical English! Really helped me get a grip.
- Lulu S.

Lessons are short and sweet and to the point, not much fluff to them. . . printed on nice thick paper, not the really flimsy others we have had.
- Dana

This has been a great help for my children's writing and logic skills.
- TN

A more "natural" way to teach the dry subject matter of grammar, Charlotte Mason style.
- Sylvia

I purchased this to brush up on my grammar skills and am finding it to be an excellent tool. Highly recommended!

The Absolute Best English Grammar book EVER

We bought this book many years ago for our homeschool. We tried BJU, ABeka, Jensen's, and while all had their strengths, Our Mother Tongue is still the book I reference whenever I need quick and reliable information. My copy has gone missing. My (English teacher) daughter was seeking it recently. And so, we reloaded! Thank you, Nancy Wilson, for supporting our homeschool, our grandchildren's homeschool, and our local Christian school. We are very grateful for your knowledge and your hard, faithful work!

Great in-depth subject matter, lack of answers in the Answer Key

I love the subject matter. I love the way the exercises are set up, makes it easy to slow down even more than the 16 week daily lesson plan if needed.
As a mom and teacher who has a very minimal education in english, I am brushing up and learning right along with my children. This makes the answer key vey frustrating. Just starting in nouns. Exercise “A” has no examples or possible answers. Actually the only answers given at all under Nouns are for exercise “B & E”. (“B” is only shown on the “look inside”). I understand not having answers for the exercise where they are making up sentences, this makes sense to me.
In exercise “B” we were to find the noun in the sentence and tell why or what category it would fit under (example: tree = thing). I was only taught, “person, place, thing, and idea”, and had no idea “activity” was even a category. This made finding all the nouns a little difficult at times. No problem, each word is given in the answer key so I could verify our answers. But when my kiddos asked, “but why”, to some of the answers. I was left staring at them like a deer in headlights because this part of the answer was not given. I would go to a dictionary and that would help on occasion, but sometimes not. The internet was just as frustrating.
I would have been happy to pay extra for a more complete Answer Key. I am absolutely terrified about getting into diagramming.
If your teaching or brushing up with multiple grades, struggling yourself, or have younger students only, this book may not be what your looking for. If you’re well educated or just helping a well educated student brush up, this is probably perfect.
