"When Nehemiah was leading the Jews in their project of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, the enemies of Israel mocked them and said, “It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words” (Neh. 6:6).

Look Inside the Book  or Listen on Canon+

Today we see a culture that is increasingly hostile to Christians, and Christians are increasingly aware that they need to form strong communities to do for them what the culture no longer can. This is a good  thing, but it will only work if like Nehemiah and his men we are committed to resisting the dictates of our culture. If we are at all afraid of looking like the crazy fundamentalists that our culture loves to hate, then our communities will be as easily led by the culture as anybody else.

In this short book, Pastor Douglas Wilson describes some of the most important ways to create and maintain counter-cultural Christian communities. Whether he is talking about the need for kids to get calluses or for love and loyalty within churches, Douglas Wilson brings decades of on-the-ground wisdom and experience to the topic.

A city without walls is not really a city; neither is a city without a church at the center. Get busy. Build the walls, fight sin, love your family and church, and live out the Gospel."

Great intro into the subject.

Well who the heck is Gashmu?! His option doesn’t matter, this book clarifies that and serves to whet the appetite of those interested in building New Christendom. Easy quick read. Do it.

Great wisdom nuggets

Our church family is in this borough/kingdom building mindset. So good to have wisdom from those who have gone before. Would enjoy seeing this book developed further.

Third time is a charm

I’m on my third time reading through this book, and each time it gets better. In a day when it seems like the world is falling apart around us, this is a handbook towards a better world. Get it. Read it. Live it.

WOW/10

Reads like a podcast, hits like a truck. This little book provides helpful guidelines for building the Kingdom one self ruled household (or congregation) at a time.
If you've been doing it wrong, it offers rebuke. If not, it serves as great encouragement to keep at it. Any true hearted christian reading this book should find themselves experiencing both.
Of course I'm recommending it to a brother.

It should have been longer

The contents were great, but it felt like Doug was just getting warmed up. There must be more to this whole topic. If Dreher's "Live Not By Lies" is Miller Lite, I need a couple more rounds of strong dark ale from Doug. Unless we switch to Talisker, of course. Rich Jefferson

Highly recommended. Great read as to what truly makes for a strong, biblical community. Praying this vision can be recaptured!
