Why should we baptize babies when the Bible says nothing about it?

Look Inside the Book or Listen on Canon+

For years, Douglas Wilson was a credobaptist, even after accepting Calvinism and Postmillennialism. However, when he sat down to write a book on baptism, he came to question his own views and to realize that the biblical teachings point in exactly the opposite direction. The result of that study is this book. Here, Douglas Wilson shows that we do not get the Bible's position on baptism by cataloging all the verses on baptism, but by looking at circumcision, the shift from the old to the new covenant, Jesus' words on olive branches, and the assumptions that New Testament Christians would have had.

Very well written!

This book fits its purpose well! It should be one of many that a curious Christian reads while investigating the Biblical merits of infant baptism and presents arguments often overlooked or forgotten in more comprehensive takes. Extremely grateful for Pastor Wilson’s insights from Scripture!

Great Book

A great read for anyone who is working out their views on infant baptism and covenant membership. Have given away several copies over the years, and people always find it as compelling as I did the first time I read it. Makes for a bunch of great conversation as well.

Answers so many questions.

I am so thankful for this book. It answers so many questions that I had with scripture about baptism, and it totally makes sense! I would read certain passages and often gloss over them because I couldn’t explain them. I just figured when we get to heaven we’ll understand. But Pastor Wilson brings clarity and honest wrestling with these passages.

A great read, but flawed theology.

This was a very interesting read and I had a hard time putting it down, but unfortunately this book falls into the same rut of all Paedobaptist works; the absolute failure to honestly address Jeremiah 31:31-34. Longshore copped out in The Case for the Christian Family and said that the plain reading of the text puts too much on the back of Jeremiah and that it's all hyperbole. Doug in Standing on the Promises does a hit and run on the passage, but only a small portion of it. And in this book he only mentions it in passing and then calls that thinking "wrong-headed." I absolutely love Doug and Canon Press and have been greatly blessed by the works put out! I've read a plethora of the books and continue to do so, because it's changed the way that I and my family think and live for Christ. But I have to say, them not dealing with the text with integrity is the proverbial fly in the ointment for the Paedobaptist community. Either you guys need to publish something that truly and thoroughly exegetes the passage, showing how it in fact is harmonious with your theology, or otherwise you gotta stop dunking babies. Love you guys and God bless!

Was a Credobaptist

Thanks to this book I’m a Paedobaptist now. Canon should sell this book with a surgeon general’s warning.
