When Princess Irene is sent away to live in a great old castle-house in the mountains, her life is dull until she happens upon a hidden stairway. But whatever—or whoever—she finds upstairs will lead her out of doors and into the mountains where only the miners are brave enough to go…

Look Inside the Book

“I have never concealed the fact that I regarded George MacDonald as my master: indeed I fancy I have never written a book in which I did not quote from him.” ~ C.S. Lewis

This is one of the best fairy tales ever told, written by George MacDonald, a master storyteller. This book is the kind of book that will keep both children's and adults' attention as they wait to find out about what happens to Princess Irene and Curdie as they go underground near the kingdoms of the Goblins.

This Canonball reprinting includes an Introduction by Timothy Larsen: "Although The Princess and the Goblin is not an allegory, it is nevertheless a deeply Christian piece of writing.... Throughout his entire life George MacDonald was always trying to lead people to God, and it is clear that he hoped that this chief lesson of The Princess and the Goblin would be applied to the person most worthy of our trust and obedience, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Trust and Obey Him."

An Excellent Classic

This is a very well written classic with great content for children and adults. A charming fairy tale with deeper truths involved. You also can pick up some of the notes that C S Lewis took into his Chronicles of Narnia Series. The Canon edition of this classic has beautiful art and is well formatted.

Grand old Fairy tale!

I first listened to this book on canon plus and thought that I needed to get it for my nieces. It is truly a great book, and Curdy will especially be someone who I will try to be like throughout my life.

Masterfully Crafted Fairy Story

I can see how George MacDonald inspired C.S. Lewis. This a fairy story that will inspire and engross adults and children alike.

I think both CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien pointed to MacDonald as inspiration for their stories. That is what drew me to read his books. The Princess and The Goblin is our 2nd MacDonald fairy story. He is a fast becoming one of my favorite writers.

Wonderful!

A beautiful edition, and the introduction wonderfully set the stage for my first MacDonald read. And the story itself was delightful! From it, I learned: 1) beware granite shoes, 2) when you see a moon standing where it ought not to be, follow it, 3) "A princess never forgets her debts until they are paid," and 4) I can't wait to get chummy with more of George MacDonald's books.

Good Quality!

I have yet to read the book (i have perused it), but I wanted to send over a quick review of the actual physical quality. Simply put, It’s a nice paperback that has a very nice text size and layout. With all the versions of this book available online it’s hard to know what you’re going to get. This version by Canon Press is well done!
