"Joy to the world, the Lord has come, let earth receive her king" — we sing the words, but do we believe them?

Look Inside the Book or Listen on Audible*

The repetition of Christmas traditions can appear to dull the powerful nature of the holiday. God Rest Ye Merry is meant to rekindle the Christian's understanding of Advent on every front, from politics to shopping to uproarious celebration. Pastor Douglas Wilson critiques false reasons for the season (and false objections to it), teaches the importance of Israel in Christmastime history, explains why nativity sets should have Herod's soldiers (and how Santa Claus once punched a man in the face at a church council), offers the Enlightenment Assumptions Detector test as a guide to understanding Christmas symbolism, and much more. The last section contains a read-aloud meditation and prayer for each day of Advent, making God Rest Ye Merry an excellent tool for cultivating a deep family love of Christmas.

From the Book:

"Our poets and seers see more than we do. They write poems and hymns, they write carols that are uninspired, but are prophetic utterances nonetheless. Just as Isaiah spoke far beyond what he could grasp, so also did Wesley. Just as the Jews memorized and chanted the words of Isaiah, words that were beyond their grasp, so also we have memorized carols that speak of the depth of glory that is coming, and we are always singing out of our depth. We are not singing about what will happen after the resurrection. We sing about the years to come, here, in our midst. We are singing about promises and blessings that will overtake our children’s children." -From the book

Customers praised this biblically-grounded book for transforming their understanding of Christmas and its spiritual significance. Many described it as "encouraging" and a "vital foundation for believers," with several planning to make it an annual Advent tradition. Reviewers appreciated the practical application of biblical teaching.

The Bah Humbug Antidote

I wasted many years with the “this is just a pagan holiday” mindset. Thanks be to the Almighty for using this book in transforming me to a lover of Christmas and more importantly the realization that the birth of our King is so very central to literally everything.
If you suffer from bah humbug I can’t over recommend Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas flick. These two works may change your life as well.

God rest ye merry

We listened to the advent reading every day...I appreciated the perspective given on different days about why we celebrate Christmas, we even missed a few days and my children asked to listen to the lost days. A great pre Christmas read.
