Why don't we win the culture wars?

Look Inside the Book or Listen on Canon+

Is it really because we’re not being inclusive and welcoming enough? Maybe one more compromise will make the world like us? Or maybe if we watch the news and get really really angry, things will change?

We obviously need a new playbook.

In Rules for Reformers, Douglas Wilson steals the strategies of the radical left and applies them to Christians engaged in the culture war. The result is part combat manual, part cultural manifesto.

Rules for Reformers is as insightful as it is provocative.

What People Are Saying:

"This book is quintessential Douglas Wilson. Which is to say it's very good, very smart, and flashes Wilson's spiritual gift of sarcasm. Wilson makes that old-time religion contemporary not by dumbing it down for the huddled masses, but through his trademark winsome snark. God's people are better for it. His enemies -- not so much." -Steve Deace, nationally syndicated radio host

"More like a lumberjack than a pastor, even when he wears a suit." -The New York Times

"Doug Wilson jumped the shark a long time ago." -Jonathan Merritt

"So just who is this twisted 'Doug Wilson' creature, anyway?" -The Slacktivist

"I much prefer Wilson's sincerity to the vague and Python-esque witterings of the interfaith and ecumenical groups who barely respect their own traditions. He is willing to maintain very staunchly that Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ and that his sacrifice redeems our state of sin." -Christopher Hitchens

"When friends ask me where I go for wise cultural analysis, the first name that always comes to mind is Doug Wilson. For years, I've found Doug's commentary on culture, politics, economics, and family to be profoundly insightful and biblically faithful. In Rules for Reformers, Doug has packaged his wise and witty cultural commentary with shrewd and gracious application of the Scriptures. In doing so, he's given those of us who love the gospel a manifest for grace-driven cultural reformation." -Joe Rigney, author of The Things of Earth and Live Like a Narnian and professor at Bethlehem College and Seminary

Great Read

Classic Doug Wilson style. Foundational reading for those looking build & fight in a Christ glorifying manner. Plus if Jonathan Merrit is a critic, I'm a fan.

Exceptional but not what I thought it would be.

It still gets five stars because that was on me for not paying closer attention when I bought the thing.

Oh! That’s why!!!

If you’ve ever wondered why Pastor Doug says and does what he does how he does, this book will help you out. And more than that, it will act as a handbook to guide you towards cultural transformation in this crazy world in desperate need of Christ.

Strategic Xian Warefare Tactics and Motivation

Not long ago I wondered if I was born for another time period. A time when men went to battle and fought eye to eye with sword and shield. I wondered why God designed me to have a warrior’s spirit. A spirit of dedication, precision, passion, boldness, no non-sense, and get er done sort of attitude. I felt alone as a Christian and as a ‘man's man’ kind of person who wanted to boldly defend truth, and practice simple obedience to all of Scripture in all of life.

Thanks to books like Rules for Reformers I realize that there is a place for men like me in the Church. Men like me have a place in this world apart from a military campaign. We are in a war against the powers of darkness but God has given us the weapons to tear down strongholds and cause mass destruction to those resisting the Kingdom of our Lord. Not the weapons of physical harm, but of taking every thought captive to Christ, and by attacking every lofty opinion that comes against our Lord.

Not only has the Lord given us these weapons, but he has given us generals with tactics and plans on how to best implement these weapons we’ve been given. I thank Christ Church and Douglas Wilson for another book spurring me on to faith, love, boldness, truth, and Christian warfare. May there be many others who hear the calling to take up arms and reform our land with the tactics and rules in this book.

Decent

I like Wilson’s content very much, however I felt the book/chapters were not organized very well and I expected a bit more practical guidance (though I can appreciate that the practicals change, but the principle stay the same).
