I teach the Protestant Reformation and early modern period to high school juniors; we frequently talk about the Christian's engagement with the state. Sunshine's illuminating exploration of the historical precedents is timely and relevant. Excellent, informative, and pithy read!

This book is takes a precise and thorough account of the historical relationship between Christians and secular government. Sunshine takes a more nuanced and thoughtful look into what our obligations as Christians actually are in relation to governments than the mainstream Romans 13 fanatics.

Excellent. Should be a text book in school

Filled in the historical gaps as to how we got here and why we should obey Gods word. Shows there has always been a Caesar, Pharaoh, or Nebuchadnezzar that wanted to us to violate our conscience toward God's word.

The book gives a solid overview of the side by side development government and organized religion in the west for the last 2500 years.
It fails to live up to the title, however, lacking a clear prescription on how to “Slay Leviathan.”

They say that those that forget history tend to repeat it. Well this book gives you the history of political thought of Christians throughout history that we have forgotten or neglected. A very important and needed work for all believers and unbelievers alike.

This an excellent historic overview of the evolution of Protestant Resistance Theory and the relationship of new testamemt church and state.
I've recommended it to all my friends.

This book lights the way back through history in the development of many of the concepts of law and government, with property as an example, through the lenses of history (and should I say church history), giving them a news perspective, enriching the understanding of what they are and why they exist. I would recommend to and maybe especially to immigrants that want to understand the concepts of which this nation stands.

Used the book for our book club and had a great discussion. Worthwhile insight up to the current time.

With so many concerns about the status of our government, the impact on our churches and the future of our society, this book could not be more needed.

Mr. Sunshine clearly lays out the development of Christian response to government, and the concurrent maturation of concepts of corporate and personal literacy. This book is clearly written at a level that anyone should be able to grasp, and contains enough citations and references to satisfy those seeking deeper understanding.

I cannot thank the editors and layout folks enough for providing footnotes rather than end-notes. The paper is high quality and takes notation from fountain pen and highlighter with equinamity.

Highly recommended for personal study, and for passing around in Bible studies and amongst the congregation, as a common starting point as we wrestle with how we should respond to today's challenges.

I would highly recommend this book. I read it in two days and then turned around and read it again. There is a rich tradition of interaction between the church and the state, from Augustine to the founding fathers. Buy the book for yourselves and then buy a copy for all the men you know.

This book opened my eyes and helped flex Christian theological muscles that were week and even non-existent in me. For any interested in how the Church has handled its relationship with the sphere of governments throughout history, and how that applies to us today, this book is for you. 10/10 for sure!

Great review of the history of political thought leading up to the foundation of the U.S. A timely and applicable book, and a fun read. 

Glenn does an amazing job at explaining the history of Christian thought and how it applies to how believers should rightly engage with government. Highly recommend for any believer who wants to understand why limited government is important and how those ideas were developed.

This was not the book I was expecting. It was purposely leading up to the American Constitution as the pinnacle of the Christian doctrine of limited government. This historically is true, but that meant the book ended on a sadder note as the author made reference to the myriad attacks on Christian liberty in 2020. It did not leave me feeling very hopeful about the future, but rather, that the Constitution was the best we've had, and the best we'll ever have. Maybe I missed something.

Nevertheless, there were many historical facts I did not know about before, including about Augustine. I gifted it to my neighbour for Christmas and so I can't check it for reference anymore. It would have been nice to have references to check the claims of history.

This book couldn't come at a better time, and it couldn't be more to the point: the question of civil authority and its limits cuts through all of history. Sunshine provides a well documented summary of the Christian tradition and its interaction with tyrannical governments, that ugly beast Leviathan, and how we must act in order to preserve freedom. Rather than attempt a radical new idea for attaining freedom, Sunshine implores us to look to our heritage to find answers.

First book from Sunshine. I appreciate his work and recommend it.

Dr. Sunshine did a good job giving his readers an initial overview of the history of the relations between the church and the state--seeing how things have ebbed and flowed over the centuries. It brings up a lot of great ideas to chew on and makes me want to jump into the original source materials!
