Look Inside the Book

Trevor Upjohn was stolen by bogeys and taken far away to the unearthly kingdom of Superbia. Most kids can't remember where they came from, but Trevor's own memories launch him on a collision course with the grand kitchen of the bogeys, fishers, a guild of humans and their magical tree, a dark sorcerer, spiders, and much more. Trevor must choose whether to help out his newfound friends or continue his search for a home he scarcely knows.

What People Are Saying:

"This very competent work should appeal to middle grade readers and imagines a world in which children are stolen away from their families. Trapped in Superbia, where stolen boys and girls are watched over by guardians until they become food for the bogeys, Trevor wakes up in cold sweats every night from terrifying dreams. With the help of a spunky mouse named Zephyr and a clever girl named Maggie, Trevor escapes from Superbia and is reunited with Epictetus, a friendly slave from Superbia who is also a member of the Guild of the Sun-Eaters. After being pulled in two directions by guild members with opposing visions, Trevor finds that his greatest mission and adventures lie in the future. ...this jaunty outing—and its cliffhanger ending—could be just the beginning of Trevor's story." -Publishers Weekly

"A story that anybody can appreciate and indeed thrill to, but whose deeper foundations can be glimpsed by those with eyes to see. -Gilbert Magazine, the official publication of The American Chesterton Society

"A fantasy world to rival the most unique." -FlashlightWorthyBooks.com

"A great story, ...a pleasure to read. ...beautifully written...." -Teensreadtoo.com

"Everything that kids look for in Young Adult books and more. ...a major find and certainly a joy to read." -Fantasy Book Critic

"Took me completely by surprise. ...Mortimus Clay's writing style is absolutely charming and sinister all in the same breath..." -DreamStuffBooks.com

A HUGE negative is...

If books that don't include a denouement and conclusion irritate your child to no-end, then this book isn't for you, just keep browsing. You'll be sorely dissatisfied.

If, however, you have a passion for cliff-hangers that leave you hanging (for 12+ years), then, this is most definitely a book to dive into and devour immediately. Put it in your cart now, do it, then complete the order.

As a read-aloud adventure that includes all the best elements from classical adventure literature, it is phenomenal; simply because everyone, no matter their age, wants you to read just one more chapter, then another. Before you know it, you've been reading aloud for three hours! For us non-professionals, believe me, that is no easy feat, but we did just that.

As parents, we enjoyed the author not talking down to the reader/audience, but challenging them without always explaining the vocabulary used. Our children came away from the experience with additional voccabulary words they have had fun using whenever they could interject them into a conversation, not-to-mention the ignited imaginations borne out through play. We are both grateful for and actively seek/desire such authors. Canonball published books have yet to disappoint in this goal.

We don't write reviews often, though we own just about every book Canonball (maybe even Canon) has published. This book demanded a review. The only thing left to say is this book won the 2010 IPPY Award, so it's been 12 years, Mr. Wiley, where is the Fey Brand?! It's why we can only give 3 stars. A generation has grown up and still no Fey Brand. That's just being cruel to (and disrespecting) the reader, especially given the target audience. So the biggest negative is waiting a whole generation plus--with no hope of an actual sequel in sight--before providing the next promised, clearly designed to be, sequel.

The Purloined Boy

We read the book aloud with the kids. It is some of the best fantasy we have read in a decade.

My daughter LOVED it but was very disappointed the next book isn't out yet

My 15 yr old daughter just read it and came to me almost angry (somewhat playful, but a little serious), asking me why I had given her a good book that left so many loose ends. That was written years ago and it didn't look very hopeful that a sequel would be coming anytime soon, if ever. So, from a fantasy loving "kid," it was enjoyed a lot, but if you read it be prepared to end wanting more.
