In the United States, the family is all but dissolved. Marriage is no longer marriage, and legally, the state could take away your children any time they wanted to. Pastor and Author Jared Longshore argues that the church’s neglect of covenantal living has led us to this pass in American society.

Look Inside the Book or Listen on Canon+

While invisible, saving faith in Jesus is the only way to eternal life, modern Americans have neglected the grace that God gives by binding families and churches to Him and to one another.

This means that families, the church, and nations should take responsibility for their people, and not treat them as so many marbles in a box. God has intimately connected us to one another in these bonds, the central bond being covenant.

We must retrieve this doctrine and live faithfully by it if we want to see reform in America.

From the Book

"What happens when we do recover the covenant household? Just how big is this restoration project? The answer is, cosmic. While this book is truly about the family, it ends up being about far more. When God fulfills his promise to Abraham that “all the families of the earth shall be blessed,” then you end up with a reformed earth, a baptized world, nations that have been taught to observe all of Christ’s commands. You end up with covenant dominion." ~Jared Longshore

Great theological work on family

Most Christian books on the family get into the ins and outs of Christian family life with little to no theological foundation. This book helped add the theological meat to my understanding of the family which will help me lead my family and also help me defend God’s standard for the family against a hostile pagan culture.

Good Idea, Poorly Executed

This book, while on a worthy topic, reads like a first draft of a college paper. Longshore's style is verbose and convoluted. It comes across as though he's trying to mimic Doug Wilson's style, but Longshore lacks the rhetorical skill.

Good ideas but writing seems meh.

The structure of the book seems pretty disjointed and less structured than a book that was A Case for anything could be. Which is too bad considering the good topics covered.

Good Book

I am not convinced fully of reformed/covenant theology but that did not deter me from enjoying this book and applying many principles to my life.
