The Third Book in the Family Series

God has designed each family to be a culture—with a language, customs, traditions, and countless unspoken assumptions. The culture of the family intimately shapes the children who grow up in it. It is the duty of the father to ensure that the shaping takes place according to biblical wisdom.

Some fathers establish a rebellious culture for their children and bring upon their children the wrath of God, sometimes for generations. Other fathers fail to establish any distinct culture, and outside cultures rush to fill the void.

Through the Messiah, God promised blessings to His people, "their children, and their children's children forever." The norm for faithful members of the covenant is that their children will follow them in faithfulness. The oddity should be children who fall away. Unless we reestablish faithful Christian culture in countless homes, we will never reestablish it anywhere else.

This book is part of Douglas Wilson's series of books on the family, which has helped many people trying to deal with the everyday messes that come with sinners trying to live under the same roof.

Best Parenting book I've ever read

Seriously the best parenting book I've read. Love the no-nonsense biblical instruction that is both practical and strategic.

Strong Biblical Advice

I read this several years ago when I was raising our children, and now I am reading it together with my son as he raises his daughter. Jim Wilson makes a clear path for parents to follow who expect to see Godly offspring genuinely follow God and reap the blessings of His covenant.

Very well-written primer on both the promises God makes to parents, and how those promises are fulfilled. Lots of practical wisdom too.

Convicting and Encouraging

This book is convicting because it, through the use of scripture, points out where I am failing as a father. It also, brings to light my faithlessness and fear when it comes to the salvation of my children. The beauty is that this book, as it points to the promises of scripture and instructs parents in how to walk faithfully, is also the remedy and brings significant encouragement to a repentant dad seeking to be faithful with the children God has given him.
