The Sixth Book in the Family Series

Sadly, pornography and sexual infidelity can be found in the church. Just because Evangelical Christians hold to a higher standard of sexual integrity does not mean that young men always possess self-control, especially with the internet ready at their fingertips. Leaders are tempted to gloss over sexual issues, but Wilson uses clear language to confront specific sins with specific solutions. He covers a wide array of issues, including pornography, masturbation, rape, divorce, and homosexuality, always bringing to bear the Biblical teaching on the topic.

This recently updated edition is a part of Douglas Wilson's series of books on the family, which has helped many people trying to deal with the everyday messes that come with sinners trying to live under the same roof. This book on masculine self-control hits hard, but also offers encouragement and useful advice to men dealing with the simple day to day work of being a one-woman man.

What People Are Saying:

"Life changing." -Christopher

"I am a married man and have struggled with masturbation and pornography before. This book helps me understand not only the severity of such actions, its effect on marriage, and my own spiritual well being, but also shows ways of getting out of a lustful rut." -a reader

"Excellent book. It was helpful to me back when I was single and struggling with the temptations of lust and pornography. It was helpful to me now years later as a married man.... Lots of practical, and yes, frank wisdom." -a reader

I was really challenged in a good way with this book and its candid condemnations of sexual immorality. This book is one I would recommend to men struggling with lust or with being a faithful husband.

Excellent

Fidelity is a must for any man regardless of age. I would recommend this to anyone! Wilson addresses many topics within sexuality that Christian men need to have an understanding of and be ready for.

Good Book

This is a very well written book. Since I am currently single however, it is not too applicable. I will definitely read it again though when I get married.

Fidelity by Douglas Wilson

This is an excellent book for men on fidelity, particularly faithfulness to God in the sexual sphere. Honestly, I can hardly imagine a more hard-hitting, needful, and revolutionary book today (I say "hardly" as, well, there is still the Bible out there). I read Fidelity when it came out in 1999, and I have benefited enormously from pastor Wilson's guidance ever since: as a single man trying to get his ship in order by God's grace, a married man doing the same, a father passing on the best I could to my son (I covered a number of the talking points when my son was about 12; there are direct sexual issues/concerns covered, so consider that), and now as a guy who uses this book as an encouragement and discipleship tool (we have a weekly book study with a few handfuls of college-aged young men, and this is our first text). Wilson shares godly, grandfatherly wisdom throughout ("Our first duty is the learn the gospel," "whether or not homosexual temptation is genetic, heterosexual temptation most certainly is genetic," "sexual sin is not the worst of sins, but in some respects we may consider it the most complicated of sins. All dirt should be washed off our hands, but pine sap is harder to get off," "In the sixties...we were frequently urged to make love, not war....But James tells us where war comes from (Jas. 4:1-7). Sexual revolutions must necessarily end in blood."). Wilson's counsel follows directly from the scriptures, chapter after chapter. He also includes a few choice words from the likes of G. K. Chesterton and John Milton. The 2012 (current as of this review) version has updated numbers for the millions of abortions America's unchecked passions have won her (Canon may be updating those again soon; sad, indeed). Keep a modern translation of the Bible handy if you're not well-versed in the KJV Bible (for instance, do you know what "variance and emulations" are...be honest) as there are a number of passages treated from it. For me, Fidelity sits comfortably in the Jocko Willink-esque SEAL team category of straight-up manly encouragement; so get after it!
