Such a good read

No Mere Mortals has been one of the absolute best books on marriage I have read. Toby Sumpter does a masterful job at giving you a full, rich view on God’s good design of marriage. He writes with boldness, truth, and timeliness — which is lacking in so many books on the topic. He hits the nail right on the head. To anyone considering reading it — do not hesitate! I’ve already read it three times and it just gets better with each read. If you were to only have one book on marriage in your library, this would be it.

100% Recommend for both engaged couples and those that are already married. A very needed resource in our time! Listened to audio version read by Toby on Cannon Plus, might make it an annual tradition to do so. Bought a hard copy afterwards for my fiancé. She's not even done reading and she's got a list of people she's planning to buy it for.

Highly highly highly recommended. Intended for married/engaged people but your young adults would benefit from this healthy dose of thoroughly biblical theology and vision for what a rightly ordered and God-glorifying marriage should be.

A fresh take on the Biblical passages on marriage. I would love to hand this to couples getting ready to tie the knot. There was only one thing out of left field (Sir?), but other with that caveat, I would highly recommend it.

Excellent and Convicting

This book is one I will return to time and time again. My original expectations were that it wasn’t going to be anything new compared to Doug Wilson’s marriage books but I was very happily mistaken. Extremely well written and filled with biblical truths on marriage that are encouraging as well as convicting. I will continue to encourage every Christian married or soon to be married couple to read this book.

The title couldn't be more spot on. I've been reading this book with the Sheologians book club and as a wife, my goodness. This was eye opening to what I need to focus more on and let go of. The view it gave me of what Bibical marriage is in the Bible, changed the view of my marriage and the way I do and should look at my husband. Thank you Toby for writing it out so spot on that any true Christian should understand.

Beautiful

One of the best and most joyful books I've ever read of any genre. First, it is simply easy. Even if you aren't much of a reader, you won't have trouble with this book. You feel like you're chatting with Toby over a cup of coffee. His style is effortless and conversational. Second, the truths here are beyond beautiful, encouraging, and convicting. Even if you aren't married (or thinking about getting married), there are lessons here about men and women, obedience, forgiveness, purity, repentance, and glory that every person needs.

I'd heard lots of marriage teaching from the covenant angle, but none that started where Toby starts here: you are an immortal. You will live forever. You will be a creature of glory (or a Gollum) for eternity. That is who you are, and that is who you will marry. THEREFORE, what do we think about headship? Submission? Beauty? Sex? Motherhood? Female pastors? Female cops? Effeminate men? Marriage vows? Birth control? Porn? Divorce?

I've known forever that marriage is a picture of Christ and the church, but until this book, I hadn't quite seen how. This is a life-changing read. I couldn't put it down, and I didn't want it to end.

Great book for book clubs

My wife has really enjoyed reading this book as part of book club with the Shealogians. And her and I have had some great conversation about the content.

No mere mortals is my book clubs choice this month. I am loving it so far. The writer is very clear and direct, it’s an easy book to understand. I knew marriage was important, but he breaks it down for you to truly understand the importance of the bride of Christ. Can’t wait to finish it.

I learned so much from this book, not only about marriage itself, but about the Bible's teachings on masculinity, femininity, the family, education, and more. It is an excellent exposition of Biblical texts, and also entertaining to read! By the way, I am not currently married or engaged, and yet I still found the book to be very valuable. Highly recommended.

Bringing about fruitful conversation and conviction

This is a great book it has brought good healthy conversation for me and my wife. We are just being convinced, convicted, and encouraged in so many great ways. Praise God for this resource.

We bought a copy for our engaged friend and plan on buying two more for two other friends. Not just to make them a happy household but to build up Christ’s Kingdom in the by way of Marital propagation lol. But seriously!

I have not fully read the book yet, but the first several chapters has been helpful. It brings the eternal mindset to my marriage. Many promises from Scripture is provided, this is a Biblically sounds book. It has already helped improve our marriage, my relationship with the Lord, and being a father.
