"Though St. John the Evangelist saw many strange monsters in his vision, he saw no creature so wild as one of his own commentators." ~ G.K. Chesterton

Look Inside the Book | Goodreads Reviews | Listen on Canon+

The book of Revelation was written to do just that: reveal. But most commentaries nowadays either engage in bizarre speculations about the future, or they keep an embarrassed distance from all the apocalyptic events that the apostle John says will “shortly take place.”

In this commentary, Douglas Wilson provides a passage-by-passage walkthrough of the entire book, showing how John’s most notorious prophecies concern the Fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Explaining symbols and characters as he goes, Wilson shows from the text that not only is this book not an elaborate code, but that Revelation is not even ultimately concerned with the end of the world as we know it. Revelation is about the triumph of the Church, which always happens when the Man comes around.

Gave the book to a friend after reading it myself.

Here’s a quote (including typos and errors) from my good friend:

“ I am reading now, and I have begun to see a pattern totally different than I ever thought before. Like everyone thinks revelation is a book of doom and despair, it is so much more. It is actually adding to My hope. It changes ones prospective in a very good way. To me it also bridges the gap between God's eternal plan for us and Revelation. The book does fit in after all.”

So, it is an excellent read, well-written, wonderfully researched, etc. Pastor Wilson’s book, “When the Man Comes Around” increased my love for Christ, increased my understanding and changed my view on what is reality.

Perfect title for the commentary at hand.

Doug does a very good job explaining how he came to the understanding of text as he goes through the entire book line by line.

Good Title. Although I'm not sure exactly the meaning.

I like how it explained Revelations. I like how Doug put the book Revelations into its present moment of 66 to 70 AD and explained in great detail for contemporary reader what the end of the world meant to Jerusalem at that time. And I believe at the very end it showed that everything that has happened since is the long road the long meandering road of the church of Christ his bride walking down the bridle aisle.

Great Abbreviated Commentary: When the Man Comes Around

I love Pastor Wilson’s writing style. This is a great abbreviated commentary on John’s Revelation. My pastor is a pre-mil dispensationalist who is currently preaching through Revelation. 'When the Man Comes Around' also serves as my emotional support as I sit through my pastor’s sermons.

This book truly changed the way I viewed eschatology. Before I read this book I was pre- mill, now I am Post-mill. Doug has a way of discussing and explaining his view on things with humility and kindness. He is never arrogant and always very clear. Ten out of ten.

This book is a great clarification of what Revelation is all about. Straightforward, unapologetic, and even humble at times. I’m buying a bunch to give to friends in need.

Very Helpful

I'm only halfway through this commentary but have already enjoyed it immensely and have learned so much. I appreciate all the other scripture references that the author connects to the Revelation passages to give them context and "let scripture interpret scripture". Also the historical context is fascinating. I expected this book to help me understand the setting and imagery which it has, but the surprise has been how inspired I have been by understanding the meaning and imagery to be a more worshipful person.
