Why don't we win the culture wars?

Look Inside the Book or Listen on Canon+

Is it really because we’re not being inclusive and welcoming enough? Maybe one more compromise will make the world like us? Or maybe if we watch the news and get really really angry, things will change?

We obviously need a new playbook.

In Rules for Reformers, Douglas Wilson steals the strategies of the radical left and applies them to Christians engaged in the culture war. The result is part combat manual, part cultural manifesto.

Rules for Reformers is as insightful as it is provocative.

What People Are Saying:

"This book is quintessential Douglas Wilson. Which is to say it's very good, very smart, and flashes Wilson's spiritual gift of sarcasm. Wilson makes that old-time religion contemporary not by dumbing it down for the huddled masses, but through his trademark winsome snark. God's people are better for it. His enemies -- not so much." -Steve Deace, nationally syndicated radio host

"More like a lumberjack than a pastor, even when he wears a suit." -The New York Times

"Doug Wilson jumped the shark a long time ago." -Jonathan Merritt

"So just who is this twisted 'Doug Wilson' creature, anyway?" -The Slacktivist

"I much prefer Wilson's sincerity to the vague and Python-esque witterings of the interfaith and ecumenical groups who barely respect their own traditions. He is willing to maintain very staunchly that Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ and that his sacrifice redeems our state of sin." -Christopher Hitchens

"When friends ask me where I go for wise cultural analysis, the first name that always comes to mind is Doug Wilson. For years, I've found Doug's commentary on culture, politics, economics, and family to be profoundly insightful and biblically faithful. In Rules for Reformers, Doug has packaged his wise and witty cultural commentary with shrewd and gracious application of the Scriptures. In doing so, he's given those of us who love the gospel a manifest for grace-driven cultural reformation." -Joe Rigney, author of The Things of Earth and Live Like a Narnian and professor at Bethlehem College and Seminary

Customers praised this book as "a practical and inspiring tool" for cultural transformation, calling it "The Art of War for Christians." Reviewers appreciated the biblical foundation and actionable strategies. One customer noted organization could be better and expected more practical guidance. Overall highly recommended as "excellent" and "brilliant."

Great Read

Classic Doug Wilson style. Foundational reading for those looking build & fight in a Christ glorifying manner. Plus if Jonathan Merrit is a critic, I'm a fan.

Exceptional but not what I thought it would be.

It still gets five stars because that was on me for not paying closer attention when I bought the thing.

Strategic Xian Warefare Tactics and Motivation

Not long ago I wondered if I was born for another time period. A time when men went to battle and fought eye to eye with sword and shield. I wondered why God designed me to have a warrior’s spirit. A spirit of dedication, precision, passion, boldness, no non-sense, and get er done sort of attitude. I felt alone as a Christian and as a ‘man's man’ kind of person who wanted to boldly defend truth, and practice simple obedience to all of Scripture in all of life.

Thanks to books like Rules for Reformers I realize that there is a place for men like me in the Church. Men like me have a place in this world apart from a military campaign. We are in a war against the powers of darkness but God has given us the weapons to tear down strongholds and cause mass destruction to those resisting the Kingdom of our Lord. Not the weapons of physical harm, but of taking every thought captive to Christ, and by attacking every lofty opinion that comes against our Lord.

Not only has the Lord given us these weapons, but he has given us generals with tactics and plans on how to best implement these weapons we’ve been given. I thank Christ Church and Douglas Wilson for another book spurring me on to faith, love, boldness, truth, and Christian warfare. May there be many others who hear the calling to take up arms and reform our land with the tactics and rules in this book.

Decent

I like Wilson’s content very much, however I felt the book/chapters were not organized very well and I expected a bit more practical guidance (though I can appreciate that the practicals change, but the principle stay the same).

Reading for the second time!

I originally listened to this book through the Canon Press app (which I love). As soon as I finished listening, I ordered the paperback.

This book is exceptionally relevant to the battles that Christians face today, and Wilson gives practical strategies for fighting the enemies in our culture. I’m working my way back through this book to arm myself with scriptural defenses and Biblical comebacks to the challenges we see every day.

I love Wilson’s style of writing. Satire is my native language, and I think it is cutting and effective when it relies on a solid scriptural backbone.

Sometimes this entire world seems beyond hope, but this book helped restore my fight.

Best Book For This Age!

I bought this book on a whim because the cover made me reminiscent of Sons of Anarchy. What I discovered is this book is essentially The Art of War for Christians, which is so necessary for these crazy times that we live in. One of the best books I have ever read.

I wish I came across this book five years ago

If you've been recently caught up in all the instability in our nation and you've wondered about what action to take--then this book is for you! I wish I had read it before the 2016 election and had used this as a guide for thought and action in the face of our rapidly degenerating society.

We need to act in wisdom and not just react to the current evils.

Great teaching

Rules for Reformers is a great read and even better teacher. Doug Wilson lays out his points with much needed application. Instead of throwing out platitudes or complaining about the time we live, he gives answers with calls to action coupled with a strong map on how to accomplish or follow out the rules.

Holistic spiritual warfare

I wish my pastors would read and believe the premises/conclusions of this profound work of wisdom. But alas, my pastors have lost the name of the game. Instead of "all of Christ for all of life," and victory in history, they confess "all of Christ for my justification and sanctification, period," and defeat in history.

Thankfully, Pastor Doug Wilson has written the seminal handbook on culture war holding to the former, and we are all so much better for it.

Great book.

The more I read Wilson the more I love his style and wordsmanship. He is truly a wordsmith who can punch you in the face with biblical truth from a fist of iron and in the next breathe quench your soul like a drop of rain on a dry creek bed.

A Review for Reformers

I had set out originally to purchase a different title from Canon Press. However, as I searched the store, the title grabbed my attention and demanded “tolle lege”. I have not been disappointed with my purchase and have been very encouraged by Wilson’s book.

In times like these, naïveté is unacceptable for the Christian. In fact, I do not believe it is hyperbolic to say there has never been a greater time (and need) for reform. May God have mercy in giving His people a boldness to stand!
