Welcome to the Fresh Tank

⭐Introducing a whole new (super fun and cheerful) project—Fresh Tank!⭐Our first effort at encouragement that is slower than social media and faster than a book.

Whenever you are on your phone, someone is probably selling your attention. They sell each other access to you—to what you will look at, to what you will think about, to what you will admire. Your mental space is on the auction block, and probably already sold to several bidders several times over. The only question is how much more of your attention they can get their hands on. It’s a bleak world behind the filters, and I think most all of us have had some feeling of revulsion at some point regarding how much of our time and attention we have given away.

If I could get a drug dealer to hand out Gospel tracts to every customer, I would without a second thought. But I don’t feel the same way about getting a drug dealer to hand out tips on Christian child rearing or hospitality or regular Christian living—because the first major tip would be to “Don’t be here!” Meta has in many ways become the street corner dopamine dealer. Facebook and Instagram: Always there, always available, always with a quick distracting hit.

Because of this social landscape, we wanted to try something very old school and see if we could detach Christian encouragement from the scroll. As a wife and mother myself, I know that there are many real-life things that are demanding your attention—things for which you frequently need encouragement. Encouragement that functions in the real world of plodding and folding laundry and thinking and talking—and generally being present mentally where you are physically.

We all grow weary, and we all need the fellowship of others who believe what we believe and are doing the kind of work we are doing—but what we don’t need is to slip into mindless scrolling hoping to find it. The work that we are all engaged in—the work of trying to live faithfully as believers—that is a long, steady work that requires slow and steady encouragement. In a world of social media sugar, we hope to be a nut or a whole grain. Something that fills you up longer and actually equips you for more work and not just more cravings.

And so here it is: our first effort at encouragement that is slower than social media and faster than a book.

The Fresh Tank hopes to be just that—a weekly tank up, a boost of encouragement. I’ll be writing each week on whatever things have been encouraging me lately, always with a focus on practical Christian living. It won’t be flashy, but I do hope it serves to fuel the work of many faithful hands in many faithful homes. I hope it serves as real fuel, and is as edifying for you to read as it is for me to write.

All of the content is free—it will be available online and as a podcast. But we thought it would be fun to have the option of an in-person, old school, mailed-to-you newsletter as well. Something cheerful to hold in your hand and crinkle and leave a coffee ring on. You could write a phone number on it while twirling the curly telephone cord with your other hand. It also means that it is possible to give a hard copy as a gift or simply surprise yourself with it on a weekly basis.

I often think of that threefold resistance that every Christian faces: The world is here to distract us, the flesh is here to be weak, and the Devil is here to accuse us. But what is it that the world and the flesh and Devil all want to keep us from?

The world, the flesh, and the Devil work together to keep us from true and deep and faithful work. They want to keep us from walking faithfully, and humbly, as free women with our God. But the world does not own our attention or our time. The flesh does not have power over those who are walking in the Spirit. And the Devil can lay no charge against us that Christ cannot answer.

I hope to be an occasional voice in your life reminding you of those things. We have no reason to be discouraged. When the path of what the Lord has called you to is seeming too difficult, when your heart is fainting and your spirit is weak, when you are looking to much inwards and not feeling the strength of joy—this is when I hope to pop in to your life to remind you Whom you serve. It’s not that you can do it, but He can!

I hope you will join us for encouragement off the scroll. Everyone needs a fresh tank from time to time!
