“This letter is truly the most important piece in the New Testament. It is purest Gospel... it seems that St. Paul, in writing this letter, wanted to compose a summary of the whole of Christian and evangelical teaching which would also be an introduction to the whole Old Testament.” ~ Martin Luther

Look Inside the Book

Romans is more than a collection of proof texts for Reformed theology. It is an exposition of God's plan to take back the world.

In this new commentary, Douglas Wilson tackles Paul's meaty letter passage by passage, explaining Paul's central message of the Gospel: Jesus’s death and resurrection have transformed the world. God has brought an end to the old covenant and ushered in a new covenant, joining Jews and Gentiles in one new people. And if Jesus is Lord, then Caesar is not, and thus the Gospel requires faithful Christians to defy tyrants when they usurp Jesus’s place.

If Romans hasn't seemed so before, then certainly by the end of this commentary it will appear to you as it did to Protestant theologian Frédéric Godet—as "the cathedral of Christian faith."

Famous Quotes on the Book of Romans

"I think it meet that every Christian man not only know [Romans], by rote and without the book, but also exercise himself therein evermore continually, as with the daily bread of the soul. No man verily can read it too oft, or study it too well; for the more it is studied, the easier it is; the more it is chewed, the pleasanter it is." ~William Tyndale

"[Romans is a] compendium of all Christian doctrine." ~Philip Melanchthon

“[The] cathedral of Christian faith"~Frederic Godet

"if a man understands [Romans], he has a sure road opened for him to the understanding of the whole Scripture." ~John Calvin

Very good

More introductory than I was expecting, but insightful nonetheless. Especially appreciated the discussion of the marriage analogy in the beginning of Chapter 7. If you want a detailed exploration of the text to suds out and deal with multiple perspectives and potential objections, this is not written to that level.

To the Church in Rome

The Roman Epistle cannot be read too many times. Pastor Wilson points out things I’d never considered. Plus his exegesis is easy to follow and understand. I will reread this book

I look forward to reading.

I can’t yet review. I have more books than I need but less books than I want. It’s on the stack to be read.

Great commentary

Read the letter to Rome over and over and this has helped me so much in better understanding what Paul was writing. Highly recommend as a resource for Bible study

I haven't received the order yet. Seems like it got stuck in Johannesburg.

Gonna borrow the "mountain range of gold" analogy from the Introduction.

Also love the fact that Doug's commentaries run in the hundreds of pages (not thousands). Very helpful and a great example for those of us training missionaries/pastors in developing nations (tibetAndina dot com).
