What does it mean to be a covenantal husband? What does it mean to be a covenantal father?

Federal thinking is foreign to the modern mind. Federal has come to mean nothing more than centralized or big. Because our federal government has become so uncovenantal, it is not surprising that the original meaning of the word is lost. But federal thinking is the backbone of historic Protestant theology, and the Church needs to recover the covenantal understanding of federal headship. Husbands are to lead their families, taking responsibility for them as covenant heads—as federal husbands.

This book is a part of Douglas Wilson's series of books on the family, which has helped many people trying to deal with the everyday messes that come with sinners living under the same roof. This book on covenantal headship contains much practical and biblical wisdom that is never more timely than now, but which we will always need to be reminded of again and again.

How would you describe the spiritual aroma of your home?

The source of this aroma is the relationship between husband and wife. Many can fake an attempt at keeping God's standards in some external way. What we cannot fake is the resulting, distinctive aroma of pleasure to God.

Reforming Marriage does what few books on marriage do today: it provides biblical advice. Whether it has to do with respect and love, confession of sin, sexual fidelity, or even the gnarly issues of divorce and remarriage, Douglas Wilson points to the need for obedient hearts on the part of both husbands and wives. This book is part of the Canon Press series of books on the family, which has helped many people trying to deal with the on the everyday messes that come with sinners living under the same roof. Godly marriages proceed from obedient hearts, and the greatest desire of an obedient heart is the glory of God.

Insightful book

I appreciate Joe Rigney’s perspective on the “both/and” of this topic.

Loved it. Biblical and practical. Would highly recommend!

Leadership and Emotional Sabotage: Resisting the Anxiety That Will Wreck Your Family, Destroy Your Church, and Ruin the World

Necessary Call to Faithful Leadership

I have passed this out to all my elders, many future elders, and even led a local group of automotive dealership leaders through this book.
If only someone could get a copy of this into every pastor, businessman, and politican, we would turn this sinking ship of a nation around.

Great Book

We bought for all the elders at our church, and then bought another 20 copies for our wives and other people in the church.

Biblical, practical, and addresses our current situation.

Leadership and Emotional Sabotage: Resisting the Anxiety That Will Wreck Your Family, Destroy Your Church, and Ruin the World

One of the Most Important Books on Christian Leadership

I'm going to be recommending this book to a lot of pastors, fathers, and Christian leaders. Biblical, insightful, and impactful.

A Must Read for Church Leadership

This book is worthy of a formal review. But for this purpose, I will only say that this is a must read for any in church leadership. I intend to take my elders and deacons through it for years to come.

Practically though, anyone I believe would benefit from the simple and practical lessons communicated in classic Rigney style.

Read and enjoy and read again.

ND Wilson spins a fascinating story in league with the fantasy greats. It's a series I can feel good about handing to my kids, highly recommend!

Insightful and instructive!

Every Christian leader must read this book! From fathers in the home to pastoral leaders, Rigney’s work provides insight into the methods of sabotage that faithful leaders will encounter. In addition to exposing the problems, Rigney provides solutions and guidance to help leaders remain calm, focused, and resolved to lead the way God has called.

Leadership and Emotional Sabotage: Resisting the Anxiety That Will Wreck Your Family, Destroy Your Church, and Ruin the World

Do yourself a favor and pick this book up!

I absolutely love this book! My reading life was changed for the better a few years ago after reading Adler's How to Read a Book and I was actually close to giving it a reread when this came out. After reading this, I am convinced that this is a better read, especially as a Christian, and it sums up in a more succinct way what Adler was communicating. I also think it gives more helpful and practical advice for the average reader that will help them jumpstart their love of reading or will strengthen the joy the seasoned reader has.

I recommend this to anyone. I read portions of it aloud to my wife and kids and we had great discussions on how to build our reading skills and get more out of our time in good books and more importantly the Bible.

Godly, Manly Leadership is Needed

This book is excellent! We need Godly, manly leadership now more than ever and this book will help us as men to uncover the things that weigh us down and hinder us from being able to fulfill what God has for us as men.

My Wife Loved it!

I bought this for my wife for Mother's Day and she has thoroughly enjoyed it. Every so often she shared snippets from the book (as she was reading it) and expressed gratitude for the wisdom she learned from it. She also reflected on the grace that God showed her through our years as parents and realized that today is always a good day to learn something new on parenting by God's promises. We're both grateful for the way that God uses others to sharpen us through good books. Thank you Rachel!

A Companion to The Case for Christian Nationalism

This isa terrific guide for cursive writing for my 2nd grader. Unless I've missed it, I wish there were a teacher guide. But so far, he's just picked it up everyday and gets writing! I love the simplicity of it also

One of the Best Leadership Resources I've Ever Read

I realize the title sounds over the top, but having been in Organizational Development and in the pastoral ministry for ten years, this really is the best leadership resource I've read. Rigney is short, to the point, and able to pack so much wisdom in such tight places, I will come back again and again to help myself and others.

Chapter 5 worth the price of admission on its own

Rigney distills Friedman's work into simple and understandable language and then gives it legs by demonstrating how the principles play out in everyday life. He brings the concept of "emotional sabotage" to light by demonstrating how subversively it occurs, often without its victims realizing it. The temptation to be emotionally steered and manipulated by others (called "triangulation" by Friedman) who are often emotionally immature themselves, must be faithfully resisted. The problem (or benefit!) with reading this book is that you will begin to see it happening everywhere! This is a concise and helpful book not just for leaders, but for anyone seeking to faithfully follow Jesus in an age of emotional sabotage.

Interesting quotes

I think it’s great to have the questions so you can better understand the content and retain it at the same time.

Absolutely oustanding , I am highly recommending it, my Son is a high school football coach, and we are hoping to get the whole staff to read it, SDG!

Valuable and Timely Book

Biblical and practical. As a pastor, I've used this book already - it gives actionable wisdom that we used to keep two emotional church members from sabotaging a thriving ministry. If you are a Church leader, you need this book.

Solid encouragement for leaders to be sober minded

I especially enjoyed the last half and his engagement with Paul in Gal 2 and Acts. I’d love to be more of the sober-minded leader (or the differentiated leader) that Rigney describes.

On a slightly related, on the printed page, his criticisms of empathy and winsomeness are far more nuanced, balanced, and sensible than the Twitter soundbites seem to suggest.
